Sikhism is a monotheistic religion meaning they believe that there is one God. The religion was founded in an Indian district called Punjab. The Sikh’s believe in The Ten Gurus and the teachings of the sacred scriptures. The goal of the Sikh religion is to build a closer, more loving relationship with God. They worship either at home or in temples. The holy temple is called The Gurdwara. They do not believe in smoking, drinking or abortion. They they pray to the Sikh Gurus. The Sikh's follow the teachings of Guru Nanak.
Lifestyle Norms
They believe in preservation of natural hair and practice the "Five K's." These include:
- Kesa: long hair that is never cut. (Preservation of natural hair)
- Kangah: comb
- Kacha: short pants
- Kara: metal bracelet
- Kirpan: a ceremonial dagger.
The Sikh’s celebrate three Hindu festivals which they refer to as Gurpurbs: Vaisakhi, Divali, and Holi.
Conflicts
The Sikh have had to deal with many conflicts by living mostly in a Hindu nation. The biggest conflict they have had to face was The Sikh Riots in 1984. The Sikh's wanted to get away from the mostly Hindu nation and have there own piece of land they could have to call there own. The Indian government did not like this idea so they ordered the military to go to the Golden temple and kill the separatists. Because of this many innocent people were killed and many others were injured. And because of this many Sikh thought of this to be a attack on there religion.
Sikh Discrimination
On July 30th 2006 a Sikh man was the victim of a stabbing. Iqbal Singh, 66 was with his 2 year old granddaughter when he was stabbed once in the neck with a steak knife by Everett Thompson. He was stabbed because he was mistaken for a Muslim Terrorist.
Four teenagers burnt down the Gobind Sadan Sikh Temple in Palermo, New York, just eight weeks after the World Trade Center tragedy. They thought worshipers and followers of the Sikh Temple supported the perpetrators of September 11 because they have beards and wear turbans.
Number Of Religious Followers
There are an estimated 25 million people who follow the Sikh religion around the world. The Sikh do not have much influence on the government in India but even though they do not have much influence over the parliament they still have representation in the Indian Parliament.
